Plans to develop a five-building office space inside an eco-dome at Battersea have been shelved after concerns over a proposed 750ft tower affecting protected views of the Houses of Parliament.
Real Estate Opportunities (REO) abandoned plans for the ultra-modern office space development which included five office blocks covered in a plastic dome with a 300m high tower or chimney.
Designed by Uruguyan architect Rafael Vinoly, the eco-dome covering the office space supported the sustainability credentials of the development.
An in-depth public consultation and discussions with The Mayor of London, English Heritage, The Commission of Architecture for the Built Environment and Wandsworth Borough Council have caused the developers to put the eco-dome office space on hold and work on an alternative.
A spokesman for the REO said “There were serious concerns over protected views and so the company is rethinking the dome idea.”
It’s believed REO will still be planning a mixed-use development comprising of retail, residential and office space within the green remit. The new proposal is expected later this year as construction of the scheme is due to start in 2012 for completion in 2020.
