Construction of the Shard tower to begin

City of LondonSet to be the biggest sky scraper in Europe, the Shard will join the likes the of the Gherkin as iconic London sky-line office space. Contractors Mace have signed an estimated £425 million deal with the developer Sellar Group.

The deal means that construction of the skyscraper office space will begin in March. The iconic structure forms part of the £2 billion regeneration project at London Bridge. 

The 310 metre high tower will be sited next to London Bridge railway station where the concourse is being redeveloped as part of the Renzo Piano plans for the regeneration of The London Bridge quarter. 

Chairman of the Sellar Group, Irvine Sellar said ” “This is another major milestone in the creation of what we believe will be a truly international landmark building and an icon for London. London Bridge Quarter is a significant regeneration project of the London Bridge Station area and will employ around 12,000 people in two buildings upon completion.” 

 

As well as the railway station concourse, London Bridge Place, a landmark 17 storey office space building is set for a facelift.  The London Bridge quarter regeneration takes in almost 2 million square feet of office space, retail and residential accommodation. The construction of the Shard tower forms the first phase of the regeneration project.

Chief Executive of Mace, Stephen Pycroft said: “This is a fantastic milestone for our company and an encouraging sign for our industry in difficult times. Mace first became involved with the Shard in 2004 and we are all delighted to conclude the negotiations so that we can get on with the challenge of building what will be a uniquely prestigious project for London.”
