Birmingham gives thumbs up to major office space development

office2Planning permission has been granted to Quintain Estates & Development for two huge office space buildings in Birmingham’s Eastside regeneration area, City Park Gate.

Outline planning permission has been granted to use land cleared by the demolition of the elevated Masshouse Circus in Birmingham to create what has been described as an “attractive urban area” including over 300,000 square feet of office space, as well as almost 100,000 square feet of retail space and a 150,700 square foot hotel.

This office space development at Number 1 City Park Gate will cover 8 levels, while Number 2 will cover 6 levels in what is being described as Birmingham’s “new learning technology and heritage quarter”.

The new retail and office space been designed by architects MAKE who also designed the Cube, which made up the final element of Birmingham’s iconic Mailbox office space and retail development.

MAKE said “Environmentally progressive design is delivered by a holistic sustainable approach which balances economic, social and physical impact. The principal environmental strategy has been to consider the balance of energy consumed over the development’s entire life - in construction, in use and in the lifestyle choices it allows - and adopt passive design strategies that reduce the requirement for energy consumption.”

The new office space and retail development makes up part of the wider Eastside regeneration in which Quintain plan to “transform working life in Birmingham city” much as Canary Wharf did in London.

The City Park Gate site is bordered by Moor Street Railway Station, The Bullring, Martineau Galleries and the Eastside City Park.
