Ouseburn Gateway office scheme approved

sointernational_serviced_offices_internationalPlanning permission for a mixed-use development in Newcastle’s quayside has been granted following a public enquiry.

The Ouseburn Gateway scheme was opposed by residents who argued that views from the Free Trade would be lost.

The development will be comprised of a four-storey office block, a 13 storey tower housing 89 flats, a 40-space underground car park, a gallery, a café and a public square.

The development, situated in the Tyne Gorge at the confluence of the Ouseburn and Tyne rivers, is set to breathe new life into the site that is currently derelict and bring over 400 jobs.

The site is being developed by George Wimpey and designed by architect Sir Terry Farrell.

Speaking about this development Sir Farrell said: “The Tyne Gorge, with its unique topography, creates a dramatic spatial experience with spectacular views up and down stream. I hope the development will also act as a catalyst for future growth to the lands adjacent to Spillers Mill and onwards to the Ouseburn Valley.”
